It might be caused due to hormonal changes or pathogenic infection which may trigger this disorder. Patient may suffer from oval or round baldness in your scalp.

Total loss of hair from the scalp region and this can occur speedily or from development of Alopecia areata. The chief cause of this could be mental stress. This type of hair loss condition is an intermediary condition between Alopecia universalis (hair loss from total body) and Alopecia areata. It generally appears as a moderately abrupt and complete hair loss from the scalp, or more steady.

  • Alopecia universalis:

The hair loss occurs throughout the body, usually includes rapid hair loss together with eyelash and eyebrow hair. This is an autoimmune condition and is considered to be the most severe form of Alopecia areata.

  • Alopecia barbae:

Hair loss occurs in facial region (bearded region of the face, chin), affecting both males and females.

  • Alopecia mucinosa:

In this condition, inflammation occurs in both sebaceous glands and hair follicle resulting in scarring and non-scarring hair loss. If the scarring gets severe, it signifies the severity of the disease. This condition usually affects neck, face and scalp region as well as any body part. It is also an autoimmune disorder.

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss):

It results in gradual thinning of hair almost to a transparent condition. This type of hair baldness condition is usually genetic. This condition generally begins with a thin hairline and/or baldness on the top of the head. Almost 50% of male population is affected by Androgenetic alopecia at some point in their lives.

Females are at a higher risk of Androgenetic alopecia while undergoing hormonal changes during the menopause. In this condition, hair on the head becomes thinner, whereas facial hair may become coarser. Even though new hair is not produced, the hair follicles remain still alive suggesting effective hair regrowth.

This hair loss can be due to any reason including:

  • Hair break may occur due to pulling or twisting of hair or after hair styling treatments.

Hair loss occurs due to excessive pulling of hair, most common in females. If this condition gets lengthened, the person may lose his/her hair permanently. In females, this condition may happen due to very tight braids or ponytails.

  • Anagen effluvium:

Usually occurs due to use of chemotherapeutic agents or radiotherapy. Hair loss begins as a patch and gradually becomes total. In many cases, as the treatment is stopped the hair returns back to normal state. Uncontrollable pulling of hair can also result in this type of hair loss, in addition to plant poisoning or other diseased conditions.

  • Telogen effluvium:

In this condition, hair falls out in an amount more than normal. It is distinguished as an excessive and early entry of hair into the telogen phase of hair growth cycle i.e. beyond usual amounts of hair fall. The condition is characterized as too much or early entry of hair and is a reversible condition i.e. hair returns back to its normal state. It occurs due to excessive physiological or mental stress resulting in a change of usual hair growth cycle.
